🥔 Dive into crispy golden tater tots over savory ground beef and melty cheese for the ultimate comfort food experience.
🍲 Quick-assembly family dinner loaded with protein and flavor – hearty, satisfying, and ready in under an hour!

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

– 1 pound lean ground beef

– 1/2 diced onion

– 2 cloves minced garlic

– 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

– 15-ounce can drained green beans

– 10.75-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup

– 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

– 2 cups frozen tater tots

– Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1-First Step: Get the oven and baking dish ready Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease an 8- or 9-inch baking dish, and if you have a 2-inch deep dish, that works especially well for this recipe. A square, round, or oblong dish can all work as long as it holds the layers without overflowing. A quick spray of non-stick cooking spray makes cleanup much easier later.

2-Second Step: Cook the beef and onions Place a skillet over medium heat and brown the 1 pound lean ground beef. Break it up as it cooks so the meat stays in small, even pieces. Once the beef is cooked through, drain off any extra fat. Add 1/2 diced onion and sauté it until it turns translucent, which usually takes just a few minutes.

3-Third Step: Add garlic and seasoning Stir in 2 cloves minced garlic and cook for one minute. This short cooking time keeps the garlic from turning bitter while still giving the casserole plenty of flavor. Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, then season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. This is the point where the base starts tasting like a real dinner instead of just cooked meat.

4-Fourth Step: Build the first layer in the dish Transfer the meat mixture to the greased baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Press it gently with the back of a spoon so the base is level. An even layer helps the rest of the casserole bake more consistently, and it makes serving easier once the dish is done.

5-Fifth Step: Add the creamy soup layer Spoon the 10.75-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup over the beef layer. Spread it out carefully so it covers the meat without leaving dry spots. If you prefer, you can use low-sodium cream of mushroom soup or swap in cream of chicken soup for a slightly different flavor. This creamy layer adds richness and helps hold the casserole together.

6-Sixth Step: Add the green beans Next, scatter the 15-ounce can drained green beans over the soup layer. Make sure they are well drained so the casserole does not turn watery. Season the green beans lightly with salt and pepper. Even though the soup is creamy, the green beans still need seasoning so the whole dish tastes balanced.

7-Seventh Step: Add the cheese Sprinkle 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the green beans. Freshly shredded cheese works especially well because it melts more smoothly than most pre-shredded cheese. This layer gives the casserole its melty, savory middle and helps create that classic comfort food texture.

8-Eighth Step: Top with frozen tater tots Arrange 2 cups frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese. Keep them frozen until you are ready to use them so they bake up crispier. Do not add cheese on top of the tots, because the cheese can trap steam and soften the topping. If you want extra crunch, you can even bake this casserole at 400 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 375 degrees Fahrenheit, but watch it closely so the tots do not overbrown.

9-Ninth Step: Bake until golden Bake the casserole at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 35 to 40 minutes. The tater tots should turn golden brown, and the cheese should melt and bubble underneath. If your oven runs hot, check it around the 30-minute mark. A loose foil cover for the first part of baking can help if the top is browning too quickly, but uncover it in time so the tots stay crisp.

10-Tenth Step: Season and serve Let the casserole rest for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Season the tater tots after baking with a little salt and pepper for the best flavor and crunch. This final step matters more than people think because the top layer can taste a little plain without that last bit of seasoning. Spoon it onto plates and serve warm.
