🍞 Baked French Toast offers a rich, creamy custard combined with crispy topping for a perfect balance of textures and flavors.
πŸ“ This dish is ideal for make-ahead breakfasts or brunches, bringing comfort and delight to your table with fresh fruit accents.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

– Butter for greasing the pan and serving

– 1 loaf of crusty sourdough or French bread

– 8 eggs

– 2 cups whole milk

– 1/2 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half as a substitute, but not all milk)

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– 1/2 cup brown sugar

– 2 tablespoons vanilla extract

– Warm syrup for serving

– 1 cup fresh blueberries

– 1/2 cup flour

– 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

– 1 teaspoon cinnamon

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

– Optional freshly grated nutmeg

– 1/2 cup cold butter cut into pieces

Instructions

1-Grease a 13-by-9-inch baking pan with butter, then tear or cube the bread and evenly distribute it in the pan.

2-In a large bowl, whisk together 8 eggs, 2 cups whole milk, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons vanilla extract. Pour the mixture over the bread, cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight if you want better soaking, or bake right away.

3-Prepare the topping by mixing 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and optional freshly grated nutmeg. Add 1/2 cup cold butter cut into pieces and cut it in with a pastry cutter until it resembles fine pebbles, then refrigerate until ready.

4-Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Sprinkle the topping over the casserole and bake uncovered for 45 minutes for a softer texture, or 1 to 1 hour and 15 minutes for a firmer, crispier result.

5-Serve portions with butter, warm syrup, and 1 cup fresh blueberries for a fresh twist.

Notes

πŸ₯› Use a combination of milk and heavy cream for a richer custard.
⏰ Assemble the casserole the night before to enhance flavor and soaking.
🍞 Choose slightly stale crusty bread to prevent sogginess in the final dish.
